CONTRIBUTIONS & FUND RAISING

Honorary Officers are involved in numerous projects to maintain/upgrade facilities in various reserves. They also assist in fund raising for critical conservation projects like rhino poaching and wildlife crime investigations.

Projects are either self funded by the Honorary Officers or through fundraising by the groups or donations from businesses or individuals.

Funds donated for projects below are managed by the Honorary Officer Executive Committee to ensure that they are allocated to the project for which they were contributed.

The Honorary Officer Wildlife Crime Investigation group operates throughout KZN assisting SAPS and other organisations investigating ongoing atrocities against our wildlife.

During many of their investigations the need arises to scour the area for metal items used in committing the crime. Items often used during these crimes include knives, firearms and to bullets or casings from weapons used. As many of these crimes are committed in grassy areas, it is difficult to locate items without the use of a metal detector, At present the group relies on borrowed units where possible, but it would be far more effective of they had their own unit when arriving to investigate a crime.

Each metal detector costs R6200 and aim is to buy 10 units for team members who operate in different parts of KZN.

Contributions to this cause will help in the ongoing fight against poaching and other wildlife crime.

Projects

1. Weenen Nature Reserve Office Repairs

On Sunday 16 August 2020, the Weenen area was battered by strong winds, which caused damage to the office at Weenen Nature Reserve.

The Honorary Officers raised R1500 and completed the repairs to the damaged roof – thank you to those who donated funds and made the repair possible.

2. Injisuthi Nature Reserve
Fire Relief Fund

On Saturday 15 August 2020, a runaway fire destroyed 11 staff accommodation rondawels, a laundry and ablution facilities at the Injisuthi Camp in the Drakensberg. The staff members who were living in the destroyed buildings  lost all their personal belongings in the buildings.

The fire, which started on Friday and was driven by high winds, jumped firebreaks before leaving thousands of hectares of land around the camp burned.

From the R18 500 raised through the various campaigns, the Honorary Officers donated the following to the staff at Injisuthi:

  • 2 x Gas chest freezers (250l)
  • 2 x Gas stoves
  • Assorted stainless steel pots & pans
  • Various items of cutlery & other kitchen utensils

On 24 March 2021, HO Exco members handed the items over to Injisuthi camp manager, James Mthembu, on behalf of all who donated to the fund.

Thank you to the members of public & HOs who contributed to the collection.
